There’s a lot going on in the world of hydrangea breeding and there are many cultivars available to horticultural professionals and the gardening public. Twenty four hydrangea cultivars are being evaluated through the Earth-Kind® program at five locations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. This evaluation program is identifying the strongest hydrangeas that will perform well in a low-maintenance garden.

In this live webinar, Kathy Zuzek, University of Minnesota Extension, will highlight older and newer cultivars among both the panicled, smooth, and bigleaf hydrangeas, and discuss how they are performing in the Earth-Kind® trial.

Speaker Biography:  Kathy Zuzek is an Extension Educator with expertise in trees and shrubs. Her teaching and research emphasizes gardening and landscaping practices that focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship, including plant evaluation trials that identify well-adapted, low maintenance landscape shrubs that perform well in the Upper Midwest. Her training is in forest science and in plant breeding and genetics. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota Extension horticultural team, she worked in forest pathology research and as a plant breeder on the University of Minnesota’s woody ornamental research program that has provided northern gardeners with the ‘Lights’ series of azaleas, Garden Glow and Cardinal dogwoods, the Northern Accents roses, and other shrub and tree cultivars.
