Mary Meyer, U of M Extension Horticulturist and Professor, will highlight several easy to grow native grasses that are great for Minnesota gardens that you should be carrying in your nursery or garden center. Learn the basics of these easy to care for plants that are tough plants for sustainable landscapes and how they support native skipper butterflies.

Presenter:  Mary Meyer

Dr. Meyer joined the University of Minnesota Horticultural Science faculty in 1994 and has primarily an Extension, teaching and research appointment. Her research interests include native and ornamental grasses and sedges, especially Miscanthus, Schizachyrium, Pennisetum and Carex pensylvanica. She has studied the propagation and production of grasses including cold hardiness, and low maintenance sustainable landscaping. She is the author of Ornamental Grasses for Cold Climates, and the 10 Plants That Changed Minnesota. Dr. Meyer manages the Plant Collections National Network Grass Collection at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, which was first planted in 1987. In 2012 she initiated the National Grass Trials evaluation with eleven states that evaluate cultivars of native grasses such as little bluestem and switchgrass.
