The MFL foreman coordinates crews of workers and safety procedures while implementing the companies core values and culture. They schedule, train and develop employees, oversee equipment operation as well as ensuring that the property under their charge is well-maintained and certifications are current. Communicating and itemizing change orders promptly, completely, and efficiently in order to manage crew time, equipment, and job materials through a well documented process is a key element to a MFL foreman’s duties.

Duties include the use, inventory, and maintenance of various equipment, from hand tools like rakes and shovels to motorized vehicles, such as lawn mowers, truck and trailer, bobcat, dingo and various snow-plows. Ensuring that all safety and hazardous procedures are followed per state and federal guidelines.

MFL Installation Foremen are responsible for the construction of new outdoor spaces such as walkways, landscapes, and patios.  MFL Maintenance Foremen are responsible for managing crews to maintain client properties in excellent condition. Giving timely and instructive delegation of crew duties fall under the foreman’s purview.  Foremen lead morning crew meetings and are responsible for safety and efficiency of crew.  Foremen are required to perform several administrative duties like preparing cost estimates, scheduling maintenance, up to date safety protocol and weekly or bi-weekly in office meetings.

During winter foreman is responsible for leading snow crews for both residential and commercial accounts.  Foreman will be on call 24-7 for snow work and will coordinate with owner to understand snow-timing requirements.  Foreman must be able to return phone calls for snow work within 25 minutes of receiving call.  Foreman will take lead responsibility for all snow client properties and will coordinate crew to perform snow removal as per our snow contracts and directions from the company owner.  On non-snow days in winter foreman will work from 8-5 on equipment maintenance, repair, inventory, and storage yard organization. 

Good communication is essential to the success of MFL, foremen are responsible for communicating with executive team regarding crew development and safety needs, project updates, equipment functionality and maintenance. Providing employees with all tools needed to succeed will further development and insight into the landscaping and horticulture world, foremen are also responsible for communicating with crew to determine training, education, and growth opportunities that may be required for staff.

During installation season, foremen need to attend 7AM Monday Executive Team meetings and lead 8AM Monday Crew Team meetings.


Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $45-$55,000

Required experience and capacity:

  • Landscape Foreman: 1 year
  • Landscaping: 3 years
  • Minimum 3 years of foreman experience
  • Valid Driver's license with good driving record (Class A driver's license not a must but preferred)
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Must be able to interpret blue prints and lay out projects
  • Must have product and plant knowledge
  • Must be able to manage/supervise a 3-5 man crew
  • Must be able to manage/supervise project schedule and materials
  • Proficient equipment operating skills including driving trucks, skid steers, and mini excavators; snow plow experience helpful

Job Duties: Landscape Foreman 

  • Manage the execution of construction projects, planning labor requirements, equipment requirements and material deliveries and timing to ensure completion of job(s) within project deadlines
  • Manage safety, quality and productivity of work at sites and/or shop/yard
  • Manage the preparation of jobsites prior to the beginning of a project
  • Supervise, coordinate, and schedule the day to day work activities of a landscape construction crew of 2 to 4 employees
  • Delegate job tasks to appropriate crew members to assist in the completion of landscape constructions
  • Participate in recruitment activities by conducting secondary interviews with potential job candidates
  • Conduct on-site orientations with new employees and employees in new positions, which cover all company health and safety policies, practices, and procedures
  • Operate various tools and equipment, including: heavy equipment, dump trucks, Class A license, skidd loader, excavator, chainsaws, jackhammers, laser levels, measurement equipment, shovels, hammers, drills, etc.
  • Manage the construction of landscape design/build tasks patios, pergolas, waterfeatures, retaining walls, outdoor rooms, lighting, sod and irrigation, drainage and grading, outdoor kitchens, firepits and fireplaces ect.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment by conducting inspections, lubricating, and cleaning on a daily basis
  • Read and interpret blueprints, structural drawings, and specifications to delegate/complete work activities
  • Meet with subcontractors and supervise quality, efficiency, and deadlines
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork and digital forms on a daily basis, including: daily site meeting logs, crew daily forms, equipment daily inspection forms, attendance tracking, time and materials billing summaries, requests for time off, etc.
  • Comply with all company policies and regulations
  • Maintain and enforce standards of cleanliness and organization in assigned trucks, trailers, equipment, jobsites, and shop/yard areas
  • Ensure that all work activities are carried out in a safe and efficient manner, and that all crew members are in compliance with government and company PPE standards
  • Enforce and work in accordance with all local health and safety laws and regulations at shop/yard and on jobsites
  • Employee training
  • Communicate with customers in a polite and courteous manner

Work Conditions: Landscape Foreman 

  • Ability to work with hand tools, power tools, small engine equipment, heavy equipment, and materials
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. repeatedly through an entire work shift
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent stamina is required
  • Work near heavy equipment and other vehicles on a regular basis
  • Work outdoors in various conditions including heat and humidity, rain, dust, noise, and cold
  • Flexible working hours including occasional weekend work

Requirements: Landscape Foreman 

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the landscape/construction industry
  • Capable of operating required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Time management skills
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of specific materials, methods, tools and equipment required to complete various landscape/construction practices
  • Speak, read, and write English
  • Carry and use a smart phone or data-enabled device for communication and reporting
