EAB Discovered in St. Paul.
By Bob Fitch, MNLA Executive Director
MNLA member Rainbow Treecare discovered emerald ash borer on May 13th in a St. Paul neighborhood. Verification of the pest infestation came on May 14th from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. This discovery lends even more importance to our urgent efforts to obtain support for early rapid response funding for MDA. Please contact your legislators by clicking here: http://www.mnla.biz/legislative-center/. MNLA was asked to take part in a press conference today along with MDA, DNR, and the city of St. Paul Forestry Department.
MNLA members have an ethical responsibility to consider these thoughts:
- Arborists, tree care companies, landscape contractors or others should not frighten consumers into removing healthy ash trees.
- While there are chemicals that appear to be successful for treating high value trees, its widespread use will be expensive. MNLA believes that trained arborists are the appropriate professionals to determine whether specimen ash in consumer landscapes warrant treatment.
- Most nurseries have already substantially reduced their inventory and production of ash trees. The best advice for future production: Diversify.
- The same advice applies to all landscape professionals and garden centers as you recommend trees: Diversify. There are many great options for shade trees and, as our ash population is threatened, we don't want to create a new monoculture of some other species.
