"The good part about aging is that I haven't died yet." A quote, from an oak.
Aging trees and landscapes, like just about everything, offer (at least) two perspectives. Aging trees are usually big, or at least bigger than they were when they started out. They actually provide the shade that was advertised. They provide habitat for wildlife. They offer an opportunity or challenge to climb them... or hug them.
Aging landscapes block unpleasant things like views of highways, cold winter winds and sometimes annoying noises. Minnesotans collectively let out a sigh of relief as they peer out those tiny windows at 10,000 feet above ground when the green, green landscape of their home state welcomes them back. We're grateful to not see gray or brown-dominated landscapes. Aren't we lucky to bicycle under the shade of oak forests and to have canopies that help keep Minnesota's rainwater where it should be kept... in Minnesota!
The other side of aging is that extra, necessary attention thing. Regular maintenance. Careful and practiced monitoring for health and condition issues. Timely intervention to make sure that green assets remain assets. Regeneration.
What does this have to do with the Minnesota Shade Tree Short Course? Pretty much everything. The STSC offers an opportunity for us to mature, remain assets, manage Minnesota's greatest assets (okay, a tree-lover's opinion!), and nurture regeneration. As always, the 2016 version of the STSC hits all of the tree care and urban forestry topics, from planning to planting, pruning to preservation. More importantly, though, it is that time of the year that pulls us all together again as we mature and regenerate, learn and teach.
Join us again or for the first time in 2016 at the Minnesota Shade Tree Short Course and help make it the best one yet for Minnesota's green assets.
