Success with minnesota hardy landscape roses

Roses are our national flower and offer landscapers an incredible palette from which to work.  Few shrubs can compare with roses for their potential for an extended season of flowering, floral diversity (color, size, form and fragrances), and range of plant habits (climbers, groundcovers, miniatures, mounded shrubs, etc.). Thankfully there are more and more cultivars that are truly disease resistant, winter hardy, and well-adapted in our Minnesota climate. David Zlesak will guide us through the basics of rose care and highlight tried and true performers as well as some of the newer roses that have been showing promise in the Northern Earth-Kind Rose Trials. No matter if you are a new to roses or very experienced, there will be something of value for everyone.

Dr. David Zlesak is an associate professor of horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He has been breeding roses since 1984 and has introduced several rose cultivars including Above and BeyondTM , a new hardy apricot colored climber through Bailey Nurseries (2015), and the Oso Happy™ series of shrub roses through Proven Winners. David coordinates the Northern Earth-Kind® Rose Trials, is a board member of the new American Rose Trials for Sustainability®, and works with colleagues at the University of Minnesota on characterizing new rose viruses and studying resistance to rose black spot disease.
